Community Education & Training

Community education and training is about changing how governments, corporations, small businesses, non-profit organizations and others rethink their involvement of people with disabilities in day-to-day operations and long-term plans.

SMD offers a combination of small group training sessions and workshops, information packages and other initiatives to deliver well-rounded education and training services. These education and training services encourage and empower employers who want to make a stronger commitment to changing their workplace environments in ways that enable an individual with a disability to compete for employment and participate to their full potential in the community.

There are numerous benefits to participating in a community education and training session:

  • Sessions encourage commitment to making changes within an environment
  • People gain the knowledge to make positive changes possible
  • Participation promotes a rethinking of how organizations involve and interact with the disability community on a daily basis and over the long term
  • Participation demonstrates an organization’s desire to be community leaders who want to achieve a higher order of sensitivity in their relationships with the disability community, by gaining a better understanding of the challenges people with disabilities face every day

As part of Community Inclusion programming, SMD is once again offering the Breakout program .

Breakout is an exciting and busy summer program for adults with primarily physical and neurological disabilities. We attend many community summer attractions and events over the summer months. It’s an opportunity to meet new people, share experiences and enjoy the summer.
