Huntington Society of Canada – Winnipeg Chapter
Who We Are
Huntington Society of Canada – Winnipeg Chapter is a network of volunteers working together to raise awareness of Huntington disease and to raise funds for services and research.
What is Huntington Disease
Huntington disease (HD) is an inherited progressive brain disorder that causes cells in specific parts of the brain to die. Huntington disease is a genetic disorder. Each child born to a parent with HD has a 50% chance of sharing the same fate.
The symptoms of HD include physical symptoms (involuntary movements, diminished coordination, impaired speech, swallowing difficulty), cognitive symptoms ( loss of ability to recall information, reduced attention, difficulty making decisions) and emotional symptoms (depression, apathy, obsessiveness).
The disease leads to complete incapacitation and, eventually, death. There is no cure for HD or no treatment that will slow down or stop the disease.
Our Mission
The Huntington Society of Canada is a national network of volunteers and professionals working together to find new treatments and, ultimately, a cure for Huntington disease; and to improve the quality of life of individuals with Huntington disease and their families.
