Coalition issues call to action on UN Convention on the RIghts of Persons with DIsabilities
March 2, 2011
The Council of Canadians with Disabilities (CCD) and Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL) are calling for Canadians to push government officials towards actions on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
The CCD-CACL coalition wants the Government of Canada to create an advisory panel with representation from national disability organizations to explore how to move forward on four main items:
- National mechanisms to support the CRPD
- A “robust” participation strategy
- A national framework for implementation of the Convention
- A public and transparent review process
The coalition is also calling on parliamentarians to endorse and support the convening of Parliamentary hearings on the CRPD, saying the hearings “should be convened as soon as possible and should include representatives from disability organizations as key witnesses.
