New programming provides communication opportunities for those in need

April 15, 2009

Manitobans with communication disorders are set to receive new support with the help of a brand new program put forth by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and provincial Family Services and Housing division.

The program – officially titled the Communication Devices Program – will provide service to adults with severe communication disorders who are likely to benefit from a speech-generating device but cannot necessarily afford one on their own.

Operating out of the Assistive Technologies and Services centre at Deer Lodge Centre, the program will launch this spring and will include speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, support services and equipment.

In that respect, the Communication Devises Program (CDP) will compliment the Open Access Resource Centre by taking things one step further and offer services on top of supplies.

Operating out of the Assistive Technologies and Services centre at Deer Lodge Centre, the program will launch this spring and will include speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, support services and equipment.

Lori Wiebe, executive director of the OARC, says she feels her program and the new one will be able to act in tandem to best serve the needs of the hearing impaired.

“We will be working together,” says Wiebe, who was involved in the planning of the CDP. “I think we’ll collaborate and pick up areas where each other can’t pick up or have limitations. It’s all about providing something to those who have difficulty with access in their communities.”

Staff of the new program will assess individuals who don’t have access to assessment services within their own communities and will also provide consultation, support and education.

As part of the new program, devices will be available free during assessment periods, and then at a subsidized, low cost rental once they are permanently prescribed.

Information on the referral process and rental fees will be available soon. Questions should be directed to Shelley Irvine Day, Regional Manager for Assistive Technology Products and Services.
