Living with Hearing Loss program available to rural Manitobans
February 12, 2010
Did you know an estimated 50,000 Manitobans live with hearing loss?
We often think hearing loss is an old peoples' problem - but some four percent of children experience hearing loss by age 5, and that number only increases with age.
Many are reluctant to employ a hearing aid, while others have conditions that make them incompatible with the devices. So what else can these people do to achieve full, multisensory experiences in today's very auditory culture?
Living With Hearing Loss is one option.
SMD is proud to now offer the Living With Hearing Loss program in three Manitoba communities - Winnipeg, Brandon and Morden.
The course, which offers participants the opportunity to develop effective skills in speechreading, coping and assertiveness that will help them enjoy greater degrees of social interaction.
It aims to help decrease and even remove the stigma of hearing loss by providing those who live with it more confidence, and in turn a greater acceptance.
