June Disability Resource Digest a special, Manitoba-focused Accessibility Issue

June 18, 2010

June's Disability Resource Digest is now available - and this month draws special attention to accessibility issues in our own province.

Right up front, the digest profiles four Manitoba-made stories that focus on the ongoing fight to break down barriers and ensure long-term accessibility for Manitobans with disabilities.

First, the Accessibility Standards Legislation: A Strategic Options Paper prepared for Barrier-Free Manitoba guides informed discussion with the disability community on the content of proposed disability rights legislation. This research report measures the available options against the goals Barrier-Free Manitoba developed for the legislation.

The Digest also points readers to a feature in the Winnipeg Sun which profiles accessibility - or the lack thereof - in Manitoba, and

also a news item from the Winnipeg Free Press that details an incident in which a fast-food restaurant shooed a woman because she attempted to bring her guide dog into the establishment.

Finally, it also directs readers to a column by Lindor Reynolds, who voluntarily became dependant on a wheelchair for a day and accompanied a woman with disabilities through her daily tasks.

The Digest also features its regular profiles on worldwide accessibility, education, employment and other issues faced by the disability community.
