SMD LIBRARY SERVICES
WELCOME TO THE SMD LIBRARY
The SMD Library is a comprehensive resource centre that provides the public with information for and about people with disabilities.
Located on the second floor of SMD’s main offices at 825 Sherbrook Street in Winnipeg, the library contains a wealth of books, periodicals, videos, DVD’s software and other materials covering a broad range of disabilities, accommodation, and daily living issues.
The SMD library also offers interlibrary loans, which allows libraries to share materials with one another. This means people may be able to borrow SMD materials through your local library, and SMD may borrow from other libraries on your behalf.
ANSWERS MADE EASIER
The SMD Library provides people with an easy starting point for finding answers to their disability-related questions.
People can look for answers and information in a variety of ways:
- Categorized bibliographies on a variety of disability topics help you identify specific titles and materials;
- Searchable online catalogue allows you to find materials by title, subject, keywords, author’s name, or call number, and to arrange to borrow materials online;
- Use the on-site computers to access the Internet for free (The computers are available in part to SMD’s participation in the Community Access Program); or
- Ask the SMD Library Staff for assistance or suggestions.
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
The SMD Library is home to several Special Collections consisting of materials on specific aspects of disability, rehabilitation and habilitation as well as on related topics and issues.
Special Collections Include:
- Children’s Books on Disability

Ask the SMD Library Staff about the Special Collections and recommendations on which materials might be most helpful.
Visit the SMD Library for your information needs.
BASIC CIRCULATION INFORMATION
The SMD Library is open to all members of the public, requiring only a $5 annual membership for Manitoba residents to help offset the overhead costs of maintaining the library. (SMD clients, volunteers, Board members and staff, however, may access services free-of-charge.)
People can borrow books, videos, DVD’s, and software for a three week period with a limit of six items per person. Journals and reference books may be accessed on-site only.
