Ostomy Association receives award from Premier

The Winnipeg Ostomy Association is glowing after receiving the Premier’s Volunteer Service Award. The Association,  a support program for people who have undergone surgery of the bladder or colon, accepted the prestigious award on April 22 after being nominated by a client’s family who recognized the passion, dedication and information that fuel the organization. The award is handed out annually to community groups who improve the quality of life for Manitobans through extraordinary collective volunteer efforts.

Province announces $30-million Disability Strategy

Manitoba’s disabled community has received a significant boost from Opening Doors, a $30-million provincial disability strategy that calls on public opinion to facilitate long-term change. Family Services and Housing Minister Gord Mackintosh announced the strategy on June 4, less than one month after Manitoba’s Disability Health and Wellness Conference drew attention to the precise issues the strategy highlights: accessibility, inclusion and adaptation.

Transportation review looking for survey participants

Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation is conducting a transportation safety review to determine how easy it is for those who use mobility aids to move around. MIT conducted a number of stakeholder consultations late last month, but an online survey is still available in an effort to gather as many viewpoints as possible.

Members of Winnipeg’s disability community are inspired and moving with momentum after visits by two of North America’s foremost contributors of disability awareness and advocacy. SMD welcomed David Lepofsky and Karen Tamley to their Disability, Health and Wellness Conference in early May, which focused on the theme of Gaining Momentum for Change.

Saving Circle - An SMD Clearing House success story!

Some 13 students and one instructor are now specialists in personal finance following the first session of the brand new Saving Circle program.

Participants in Saving Circle have the opportunity to learn quite sophisticated financial skills, far removed from budgeted shopping and “how to cook lentils 47 ways.” They learn how to create financial security and strength through forethought, diligence and most importantly commitment to themselves. They explore the development of personal financial plans, balance sheets, establishing relationships with banks or credit unions, credit ratings and the all important concept of wiggle room.

Nationwide coalition prompts government action on incontinence

The national Incontinence Coalition - a group including the Canadian Continence Foundation, Canadian Obesity Network, Canadian Paraplegic Association, Canadian Prostate Cancer Network, CARP, Easter Seals Canada and Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario – are prompting officials to better recognize the condition that affects more than 3 million Canadians.

New programming provides communication opportunities for those in need

Manitobans with communication disorders are set to receive new support with the help of a brand new program put forth by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and provincial Family Services and Housing division. The program – officially titled the Communication Devices Program – will provide service to adults with severe communication disorders who are likely to benefit from a speech-generating device but cannot necessarily afford one on their own.
